The festival is an opportunity for South African and international champagne and sparkling wine producers to showcase their products. The Franschhoek and Stellenbosch winelands are the centre of the the South African wine and champagne industry. The Huguenot monument remembers the French Huguenots who fled to South Africa from France to avoid persecution for their religious beliefs. The huguenots brought with them wine making skills and contributed to the creation of the wine making industry in South Africa.
