A leopard attacked a stray dog after entering a residential area in the west Indian state of Maharashtra, in this chilling CCTV footage.

The incident took place near the SEEPZ Metro station in Andheri (East), a locality in the western part of Mumbai on the night of December 9.

The leopard can be seen waiting near the sidewalk to strike and stealthily walking towards the dog.

It then climbs a few stairs and drags the dog down, piercing its sharp teeth across the quadruped's neck.

However, the leopard's joy was short-lived as a guard soon reached the spot and raised the alarm. The leopard then panicked and dropped the dog.

Meanwhile, the dog, seemingly dead, woke up and chased off the leopard, much to the surprise of the locals, who later saw the CCTV recordings.

The guard later reported the leopard's presence to the forest department.

Though grievously injured, the dog is said to be stable now.

Seeing the guard, the leopard left the dog and ran for safety.

Meanwhile, the dog, who looked dead, woke up and gave chase to the leopard, much to the surprise of the locals, who later saw the CCTV recordings.

The guard later reported the leopard's presence to the forest department.

Though injured, the dog is said to be stable now.

Reports said the leopard attacked another dog later, though not much is known about it.

Both dogs have received treatments for injuries, according to Amit Pathak, founder of Awaaz- Voice of Stray Animals, a city-based NGO, who received a call on its helpline number.

Confirming the reports, a forest official said camera traps have been set up along with night patrol in the area.
