Protests continue to disrupt parts of north eastern India, following the passing of a new citizenship bill in parliament.

The newly amended Citizenship Act allows persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan to seek Indian citizenship, but not if they are Muslim.

While some people oppose the discriminatory aspect of the new law many people in north eastern India in particular are concerned it could mean an influx of immigrants from Bangladesh, which is majority-Muslim but which has significant religious minorities.

Curfews have been imposed in several parts of Assam state, which have been ignored by some protesters.

On 12 December in Golaghat Rongajam area, protesters burned tyres and threw stones at police.
