Several buses were set on fire and two local officials were injured after being pelted by stones as protests against India's controversial Citizen Amendment Act entered a third day.

Four buses were set on fire by a large number of people and two fire officials were injured in stone-pelting as the protests against the newly enacted Citizenship Act entered the third day in the national capital on Sunday. Locals of the Sarai Julema in the Jamia Nagar area clashed with police. The trouble began when organizers of a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, turned violent. The situation turned critical when a bus was burned by the protestors and police got into action. A photographer was injured in the stone-pelting that took place during the confrontation between protestors and police. Huge traffic snarls were experienced throughout the south Delhi area. Demanding immediate release of detained students, hundreds gathered outside the Delhi Police Headquarters close to midnight, defying the freezing cold. The arterial road outside the headquarters has been completely blocked by protesters and the police stand ready with tear gas and water cannons in case the situation goes out of hand.

The escalating protests had hit the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University first, with the students, bent on holding a solidarity march, clashed with the police. Ten policemen and around 30 students were injured and the police demanded that the students vacate the hostels. The Internet has been blocked in the city and the university closed till January 5. Protests swept campuses across the country against the police crackdown at Jamia Milia Islamia after this evening's violence over the new citizenship law.
