Tokyo Olympics to allow 50% capacity at venues - for local fans only
Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday said they would cap the number of spectators at 10,000 people per venue for the Games.
Residents of Japan will be allowed to attend the Olympic Games this summer but with numbers strictly limited, organisers confirmed. No fans from overseas will be allowed to attend.
During a meeting held on Monday between the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympics Committee, Tokyo 2020, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Japanese Government, it was agreed for the spectator limit for the Olympic Games to be set at "50 per cent of venue capacity, up to a maximum of 10,000 people" at all venues, taking into consideration the government's restrictions on public events due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Games begin on July 23.
Last week Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced the country’s state of emergency would be lifted on Sunday June 20 in all but Okinawa Prefecture.
File footage shows members of the media visiting the new National Stadium, which has a 60,000 capacity, in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward followed by the construction completion ceremony on December 15, 2019.
