A stationary tuk-tuk, which was hit by the bus first, took the brunt of the impact and saved the lives of many students.

The tuk-tuk driver, Sakaya Ramesh, was killed on the spot and 11 students were injured.

The injured were taken to a hospital in nearby Marthandam, where one student was said to be in a serious condition.

Local reports suggested that up to 25 people were hurt in the incident.
