An abandoned four-year-old elephant was rescued in northeast India after a two-day rescue operation by local officials.

Video shows the rescue operation undertaken by the local forest department in Assam state's Sonitpur district on December 9, two days after the elephant had become trapped.

In the video, the elephant is tied with ropes and a piece of cloth covers its eyes in a bid to prevent it from attacking anyone.

After giving the elephant a dose of sedation, it was was heaved up with the help of an earthmoving machine, locals said.

According to the local Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary, the elephant has since been reunited with its mother.

Abandoned by the herd of elephants, a four old year wild tusker was rescued after it fell into a pit in the northeast Indian state of Assam.

According to reports, the incident took place on December 7 in Ragapur region, a tea estate located in the state's Sonitpur district.

After giving it a minimal dose of sedation, the elephant was heaved up with the help of an earthmoving machine.

The officials have informed that the wild elephants often visit Rangapur area, in order to seek food and shelter.

According to reports, the herd of mammals had arrived at the place and while returning to the wildlife sanctuary the four-year-old fell into the ditch.

Initially, the herd of elephants tried to pull up the baby, upon failing to do so, they left the latter and returned to their habitat.

On spotting the presence of the elephants, the villagers informed the forest department officials about the same, who rushed to the spot and began the operation on December 9.

The officials informed that the marathon rescue operation lasted for two days.

A team of veterinary doctors were also called upon by the officials to treat the injured elephant, who had hurt its leg due to the fall.

A wildlife rescuer, informed that the mammal was released to the Sonaipurai Wildlife Sanctuary in the state and reunited with its mother elephant.
