An elephant calf died after being stuck in an Indian swamp for other 38-hours after being stuck in the mud on December 26.

Footage from Kulharia village in the Korba district of Chattisgarh shows authorities and locals gathered around the lifeless body of the jumbo that is still stuck in the swampy farmland.

It was reported the elephant was stuck from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day when it passed away.

Locals and authorities used heavy machinery, such as diggers when trying to retrieve the body but because of muddy conditions, this hindered the rescue resulting in them being too late to save it.

Elephant calf who was lost from herd and was stuck in muddy farm land in Kulharia village in Korba district in Chattisgarh . According to locals this elephant was stucked in this mud from Tuesday ( 24th December) but villagers got to know about this on Thursday (26th December) . After seeing the elephant stuck in mud ,villagers informed local police and forest department about the incident . According to forest official we tried to pull out elephant with help of 2 JCB machine also , but due to extreme muddy land JCP could not reach near the elephant . During night we have to halt the rescue operation ,in morning once again we started rescue but by 2 pm in afternoon we found that the elephant died
