Protests against India's new citizenship law continued in New Delhi on Sunday (December 29).

The protesters carried signs reading "Please don't divide us" and chanted "Inquilab Zindabad" a slogan which translates to "Long live the revolution".

A large number of people took out a 'solidarity march' from Laxman Public School to Hauz Khas Market on Sunday against Citizenship Amendment Bill, NRC, and NPR and in support of Jamia Millia Islamia students and those facing police action during protests against the contentious law. Holding placards, people shouted 'Inquilab Zindabad' and demanded scrapping of the law during the march to Hauz Khas. A group of students, professionals, doctors, and senior citizens also participated in the protest.

The city had witnessed a number of violent protests in the last few days. Earlier in this week, angry protesters set a car on fire, damaged several vehicles and resorted to stone-pelting near the Delhi Gate area after police personnel baton-charged them and used water cannon to disperse the crowd. Violence also erupted in Northeast Delhi's Seelampur, Jafrabad and Southeast Delhi's New Friends' Colony and Jamia during which several vehicles were set on fire and public property damaged.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) became law after receiving the President’s assent on December 12, and ever since then the protests, which started in Assam and Delhi, have spread to other parts of the country. The Bill seeks to grant citizenship to individuals who are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian, Jain, or Parsi who entered India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Afghanistan by the cut-off date of December 31, 2014.
