The largest flower in the world, locally known as the 'corpse flower' for its bizarre smell, was found blooming in West Sumatra on December 31, 2019.

The rare blooming Rafflesia, that only flowers for three to five days a year, was found in the Maninjau Nature Reserve, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, on the last day of the decade.

Rafflesia with the Tuanku-Mudae type are known to start blooming since Tuesday, December 31, 2019.

Forest Ecosystem Guard, West Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Ade Saputra said that the rfflesia flower was the largest size found until the time.

"This is the largest size with a diameter of 117 centimeters found in accordance with records so far in the world,"

he said. According to him, the rafflesia flower is the rarest type that only exists in two countries, namely in Malaysia and Indonesia.

"For Malaysia, it has been found in the Sarawak area, while Indonesia has been found here since 2017," he said.
