Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato promotes Cape Town as a tourist destination despite high crime rate

Cape Town Executive Mayor, Dan Plato, promoted the City of Cape Town as a local and international tourist destination as he officially opened the 2020 Cape Town Street Parade.

The Cape Town Street Parade is an annual event that takes place annually on 2 January every year. This year it took place on 4 January because the 2nd of January coincided with the start of islamic prayers. A large part of Cape Town’s population are descendants of Malay slaves and follow the islamic faith.

In 2018 Cape Town ranked 11 for the number of murders globally. In July 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa deployed the army to gang and crime ridden areas in Cape Town.

Cape Town and the Province of the Western Cape is controlled by South Africa’s official opposition, The Democratic Alliance. The Western Cape is the only province in South Africa not controlled by South Africa’s ruling party, The African National Congress, the party of anti-apartheid struggle hero, Nelson Mandela.
