A stunning lantern parade lit up the streets of Cape Town in South Africa on Saturday evening.

The community event, which organisers hope will become an annual fixture, saw scores of participants walk the Sea Point promenade with homemade, recyclable lanterns.

The Cape Town Lantern Parade is a community event that only allows paper lanterns that are eco-friendly, recyclable and use LED lights as an illumination source. Sky lanterns, which are illuminated using a candle or fuel cell that allows them to rise like hot air balloons, pose a massive risk to animals and the environment,

The debut event took place along the picturesque sea point promenade in Cape Town.

The lanterns are all built by volunteers an hundreds of onlookers lined the walkway to view the procession.
