A group of Indian soldiers in the state of Kashmir carried a pregnant woman on a stretcher for four hours through waist-deep snow, to deliver her to a hospital where she was able to give birth.

Following heavy snows on January 12, army troops were stationed at various areas throughout the state with contact details given to isolated villages in need of assistance.

On 14 January, the troop commander at Uplona, Baramulla, received a distress call from a distraught family from the village of Dardpura, who reported a heavily pregnant woman had developed complications relating to the birth that required immediate medical attention.

Two teams of soldiers working together were able to transport her to Baramulla hospital, with one travelling to Dardpura on foot and the other clearing the road to Baramulla, the journey taking four hours of walking through the deep now.

Despite the hazardous conditions, the woman was safely conveyed to the hospital, where she was able to safely deliver a baby boy.
