Dozens of children waded through a muddy pond in competition to catch snakehead fish.

The bizarre event took place at a village festival in Khon Kean, north eastern Thailand, on January 11 to mark the country's national Children's Day.

Footage shows the local kids, aged between nine and fifteen, splashing through the muddy pool in a rice field to pounce on snakehead fish, locally called Pla Chon, without using any fisher gears or gloves.

The winner, Tanakorn Phanthong, aged eight, received an electric toy car after he caught two fish with his bare hands.
