Alpine Primary school in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain, was closed by parents after school was vandalized during a burglary. Electrical wiring, toilets and copper pipes were ripped out during the burglary.

Charmaine Maarman, a representative of the parents, said the parents had decided to not let the children attend school as it posed a health risk.

Ricardo Mackenzie, the Democratic Alliance constituency head for Mitchells Plain, explained that he had explained the urgency of the matter to Debbie Schaefer, the Western Cape MEC for education.

Parents insisted they would continue protesting until a contractor arrived with materials to fix the school.

The school has been burgled more than 20 times in the last year according to parents. Beacon Valley is one of the most crime and gang ridden areas on the Cape Flats.
