A bungling crook tries to break open an ATM with a crowbar in broad day light.

The would-be thief was seen smashing open the cash machine on the busy Sukhumvit Road area of Bangkok, Thailand, on Monday morning (Jan 20).

Shocked onlookers recorded the man before calling the police. Officers arrived and arrested the him - without having managed to steal any money.

Police later identified the ATM attacker as unemployed Chawang-knang, 33, from the neighbouring country of Burma, also known as Mayanmar.

Shocked onlooker Pimchompoo Supprach said: "At first I thought he was a bank technician trying to repair the ATM. But I soon realised that he was a robber.

''Everyone walking past by did not warn him to stop. They were scared because he was holding the crowbar.''

Police from the Klong Tan Police Station remanded Chawang-knang in custody while they gather evidence.

Officers told local media that he had admitted trying to break into the ATM because he was short of cash.
