The Kirikiri canal that passes through Lagos, Nigeria, has caught fire after being overrun with plastic waste.

Filmed on January 22, the footage shows pockets of smoke rising from the canal's surface which is completely covered by plastic.

The Lagos Kirikiri canal stretches from the affluent island of Nigeria's commercial centre to the mainland, terminating at Ajao Estate, near the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. If the city had developed its waterways, this canal would have been the busiest as it ferries passengers heading to the airport from Island. But instead, it has been overrun by plastic waste. Now, local residents who depend on the canal for sand dredging have decided to set the plastic waste inside the canal ablaze. This video was made a day after the fire was set.
