Serak Gulo, Indonesia's unique sugar-throwing festival, takes place in Padang
Indians who live in Padang, West Saumatera, have a unique tradition of throwing sugar from the roof of the mosque. The sugar is then fought over by thousands of people. The tradition, which is usually carried out in the last Jumadil month in the Islamic calendar, has remained sustainable until now. Even more interesting, hoarse gulo only exists in three places namely Padang, Singapore and India.
After being wrapped in a small size, sugar which amounted to more than six tons was immediately raised to the roof of the mosque. This sugar is a donation from people of Indian descent and residents of the mosque of Muhammedan Mosque in the batipuh market area, South Padang.
Residents are willing to scramble, jostle, fall and even stepped on to get a packet of sugar. Some believe that sugar brings blessings and is used for at once vows.
