Refugees holed up at the Central Methodist Mission church in Cape Town’s Greenmarket Square have rejected plans by the Department of Home Affairs to reintegrate them to the unsafe communities they fled from last year.

The footage, recorded on Monday (January 27), show large numbers of protesters and makeshift dwellings on the sidewalk near the
renowned tourist market on Greenmarket Square.

After being removed from the Walford building at the UNHCR offices, refugees have sought safety in the Central Methodist Mission church.

Refugees who sought safety at the UNHCR offices in Cape Town have been staying in the Cape Town Methodist church are refusing to be moved back into their communities. They fear alleged xenophobic attacks in their areas where they reside. After being removed from the Waldorf building where the UNHCR for Cape Town is based, they moved into the cape town methodist church. Because of the large numbers, some have resorted to erecting makeshift dwellings on the sidewalk. Their presence have affected the renowned tourist market on greenmarket square and the numerous hotels in the vicinity
