The City of Cape Town today asked the Western Cape High Court for an order to enforce its local bylaws to remove refugees from the streets of Cape Town. Since October 2019 the refugees have occupied the area surrounding the Central Methodist Church.

Reverend Alan Storey gave the refugees accommodation in the church after they were forcibly removed public order police from the UNHCR offices close by.

Judge Daniel Thulare said he cannot hand down a worse judgement than a judge would have in 1968. Pre-1994 South Africa was ruled by an apartheid government that forcibly evicted and resettled people according to race.

Advocate Con Joubert representing the City said the solution was simpleton that the refugees should return to where they came from and labelled them as protesters.

JP Balous, a leader of the refugees said the he believed the City of Cape Town is obsessed with race.
