A pit bull attacked a child returning home from tuition in the north Indian state of Punjab.

The incident took place on January 28 in the state's Jalandhar district.

According to reports, the 15-year-old was returning home riding his bicycle in a narrow street when the pit bull appeared, attacking and severely injuring him.

CCTV footage shows the animal clinging on to the child's legs while the locals around attack the dog to rescue the boy, who himself tries to wriggle free.

A woman came to rescue and opened the jaws of the dog by force, risking her life and saving the boy.

The parents of the youngster have filed a complaint for this harmful attack while the child was admitted to a nearby hospital with severe injuries to his legs.

It is not clear whether the dog was a stray or owned by one of the local people.

According to a report in the UK's Independent from September 2019, an estimated 35 million stray dogs live across India. Roughly 20,000 people die of rabies each year there, making up almost a third of the worldwide death toll from the disease.
