A wild elephant caused panic among inhabitants after it strayed into a village from a nearby forest in the east Indian state of West Bengal.

The incident took on January 28 in a small village of Ranga Matia gram located in the state’s Jhargram district.

Visuals show the law enforcers trying to control the situation by placing barricades around the road, blocking the tusker's path towards the village.

The elephant is seen walking towards the agricultural fields after the locals start threatening it with burning torch sticks.

Footage also shows a man pulling the animal's tail in a futile attempt to stop the gentle beast from raiding their sown crops.

The forest department officials also arrive at the scene and quickly tranquillize the animal.

The elephant clams down and allows the officials to safely capture it.
