Scientists exploring the extreme north of Russia have discovered evidence of a potential ancient land bridge between North America and the Russian Arctic.

Trekking on the island of Stobolvoy, an area believed to be the site of the farthest northern settlement of prehistoric humans, the proposed land bridge is named "Beringia".

One of the scientists, reporting their discovery, says: "We're in Stolbovoy, found Middle Paleolithic - a terrific 'oldie'. Somewhere in between of Old and Middle Paleolithic."
