Extinction Rebellion protest against Bristol Airport expansion
Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, UK. 8th February 2020. Campaigners demonstrating against the expansion of Bristol Airport stage a three day 'festival of protest’ in Weston-super-Mare. The action is being organised by the Bristol Airport Action Network (BAAN) and co-hosted by Extinction Rebellion groups from Weston-super-Mare, Bristol and other organisations around the region.
The 27 councillors of North Somerset Council's Planning and Regulatory Committee are due to meet on Monday 10th February at Weston Town Hall to consider the planning application for the expansion of Bristol Airport. North Somerset Council planning officers have recommended the application for approval. The application has 5,400 objections and 2,200 letters of support.
The plans would see the Somerset airport able to handle 12 million passengers a year, up from its capacity of 10 million.
The protest included street theatre followed by a march around the town with a 'die in'. At 2.30pm demonstrators took part in a 'Heads in the Sand" demo when they dug holes into the sand and placed their heads inside.
