President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking at the 30th commemoration of the release of Nelson Mandela says the release of Nelson Mandela was not an act of kindness by FW De Klerk.

FW De Klerk, the last apartheid President of South Africa, announced his decision to release Mandela and unban anti-apartheid political organisations on 2 February 1990.

Mandela was released on 11 February 1990 from Victor Verster Prison after being imprisoned for 27 years. He later became South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994.

Rampahosa spoke next the statue of Nelson Mandela, on the same balcony where Mandela made his first public speech after being released on 2 February 1990.
