A governmental building in Mumbai has been engulfed by a large fire and firefighters fear there are workers trapped inside.

Filmed on February 17, the footage shows blaze raging through the upper levels of the building and smoke is seen billowing out the windows.

According to the local fire department, no casualties have been reported as of yet and the cause of the fire has been reported as a short circuit.

Fire brigade chief P.S Rahangdale said: "Hose line is in operation from inside the building and two lines of TTL from outside the building. The building is smoke logged and fire fighting operation is in progress using breathing apparatus set. The building is under repair."

Deputy CM Ajit Pawar was present in the building, attending an NCP meeting when the fire broke out.

He says: "I was sitting in a meeting in Yashwantrao Chavan Hall when I got this information. About three and a half thousand people were working in this building. Almost all are being taken out. It has been on fire for about an hour and a half.

"How the fire started is a matter of investigation. Our first objective is to bring all people out safely," he added.

A massive fire broke out on the eighth floor of the GST Bhavan in Mumbai's Mazgaon area. The building housed more than three thousand government employees at the time of the fire. In visuals coming out from the area, black smoke is seen billowing out from the windows of the building.

Around 12:48 PM, 15 water tankers and 5 fire engines have been dispatched to the spot to rescue the trapped civilians and officials inside the building. The fire has almost gutted the entire top floor of the building. According to the Fire Department, it is a level-4 (horrific) fire. The rescue operations have already started and no casualties have been reported till now. The cause of the fire has been reported as a short circuit.

One of the prime concerns with the fire is the important documents stored in the building. However, Ajit Pawar has assured that the documents are safe in other computer servers. Several local media reported that everybody inside the building has been rescued, while some are unsure of the exact figures. Further details on the current situation are awaited.
