Safari goers in Yala National Park were left baffled when an elephant nearly plunged into their jeep looking for food.

In the video, the curious elephant can be seen thrusting its head through the vehicle window as the tourists started panicking.

Soon the elephant seized bits of food and hauled them out of the vehicle with its trunk.

As the dismayed driver tried to speed away, the elephant proceeded to charge another vehicle parked behind it.

The elephant was an Asian elephant, which is the continent’s largest mammals.

An average male is nine-foot-tall and can weigh as much as five tons.

The Sri Lankan elephant is an endangered species protected under the Sri Lankan law, with an estimated population of just 3,000.

At the end of the video, the elephant can be seen gazing right into the person filming the incident.
