Thai gunman shoots ex-wife to death at shopping mall
One woman was shot dead and another was injured after a gunman opened fire at a shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday (February 18).
The mother-of-one (named locally as Khuntai Chatthai, 28) was working as a receptionist at a dental clinic when the killer stormed into the building in the centre of the Thai capital and shot her.
The young woman collapsed in a pool of blood before paramedics rushed to the Century Plaza building and tried to revive her just after 3pm local time.
A second person was injured and taken to hospital, where they are understood to be stable. Witnesses said there were at least seven gunshots.
The gunman - who fled from the scene - is believed to have already known Khuntai and police are not treating it as a mass shooting. Officers said the gunman is believed to be the ex-husband of the victim.
Police Major General Samroeng Suanthong said: "The shooting seems to have been caused by the delusional jealousy of the gunman towards the dead person, who was his ex-wife. This case is not that complicated, there are no other suspects or motives.''
Speaking today, a worker from the building said ''everybody panicked'' when they heard shots.
They added: ''I was on the same floor as the shooting and I heard screaming. There was a lot of panics, everybody was running away and did not know what to do.
''It's scary, I don't feel safe.''
Officers raced to the Century Plaza building in the centre of the Thai capital, near to the city's well-known Victory monument.
Footage shows officers in brown uniforms walking through the building. The gunman is still believed to be at large.
The shooting comes just over a week after a soldier opened fire at a shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima killing 30 people and injuring 60 others on February 8.
