N’watindlopfu - an African Elephant bull with huge tusks

Buy video

The Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) from Africa is the world’s largest land mammal. Male Savanna Elephants weight up to 6.35 tonnes (14,000 pounds) and stand up to 4 metres (13 feet) tall at the shoulder. Human greed for elephant ivory has greatly reduced the numbers of “tuskers” – large Elephant bulls with huge tusks that may weigh more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) each. We were fortunate to have a wonderful, close view of N’watindlopfu, a magnificent bull as he calmly fed near us, before crossing the road and wandering off with his companion into the bush. This bull is named after N’watindlopfu spruit (or brook) in the Kruger National Park meaning ‘spruit of the elephants’ in Tsonga
