Violence erupted in Cape Town as law enforcement officers attempted to remove migrants from a park in Greenmarket Square.

During the clashes, one migrant is arrested after trying to get law enforcement officers off his sister.

The migrants had been squatting in the area around Greenmarket Square since October when they were forcibly removed from the UNHCR offices.

During a confrontation, Kaylynn Palm, a journalist with news platform Eye Witness News, was confronted by a Cape Town law enforcement officer for using her phone to film an incident between an officer and a migrant.

This footage was filmed on March 2.

Cape Town law enforcement continued their operations today to remove refugees from the Cape Town CBD. The operation was conducted in terms of a Western Cape High Court order allowing the city to enforce its municipal bylaws.

Since early yesterday morning (1 March), law enforcement officers started moving the refugees from the area around Greenmarket Square, where they had been squatting since October when they were forcibly removed from the UNHCR offices.

Refugees then tried to occupy the St Mary’s Cathedral opposite parliament and they were removed for trespassing. The refugees then slept overnight in a park, Mckenzie park, opposite the ETV studios in District Six. Law enforcement officers then started an operation to remove them from the park.

The Cape Town law enforcement division falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Cape Town and does not fall under the authority go the South African Police Service.
