Ten students riding an overloaded auto-rickshaw on their way to an exam miraculously survived after their vehicle crashed and flipped over in northern India.

The incident took place in Ludhiana, Punjab state, on March 3 as eyewitnesses said a scooterist moving ahead of the tuk tuk suddenly took a sharp turn, causing the tuk-tuk driver Varinder Kumar, 26, to lose control and crash.

Hearing the cries of the trapped children, passersby rushed to lift the auto-rickshaw and pull them out. Police arrived and shifted the children to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Fortunately no fatalities were reported, though doctors claimed a boy and a girl had suffered a fractured leg and a fractured arm respectively. The other children had sustained just minor injuries.

The police have arrested Varinder Kumar and booked him and Roshan Lal, 62, who was riding the scooter, for rash driving and endangering life of others.

Police said the students were Class 8 students at SMD Convent School, Laxmi Nagar.
