The Boat Store is situated within Sheerness docks and hidden from public view. It is the World's earliest surviving example of a multi-storey, iron-framed and panel structure - the first building with a true rigid iron frame, with no load bearing masonry. The all-metal frame, made rigid by portal bracing was subsequently adopted by early skyscrapers in Chicago, and is the basis for modern steel-framed buildings. Currently unused and decaying, it was identified by the Victorian Society as one of the top 10 most endangered Victorian and Edwardian Buildings in England and Wales in 2015.
