Amazing aquatic microscopic life vorticella feeding

Buy video

This footage has been captured using a camera on a microscope. Elodea (a freshwater aquatic plant) was carefully removed from a pond and a wet mount microscope was made using one of the leaves. Using a high powered microscope I was able to film the vorticella which are anchored to the leaf. The vorticella uses special hairs near its mouth to produce vortexes in the water. The swirling action drags microscopic algae and protists into its mouth. To trap the food and start the digestive process the vorticella has an astounding action where it contracts and coils like a spring faster than the eye can see. It then slowly relaxes and extends back to its normal length and the process continues.
