A bird with eyelashes! Young Ground Hornbill preening and looking around

Buy video

Southern Ground Hornbills (Bucorvus leadbeateri) are turkey-sized, endangered birds that are usually seen in family groups in savanna and grasslands in protected parks and reserves in the southern Africa. Adult Southern Ground Hornbills have vivid red skin on their face and throat, while the facial skin of immature birds is yellow or yellow-orange. Ground Hornbills are unusual – they are one of the few bird species that have eyelashes – these are obvious on this young bird. This sighting of an immature bird perched alone in a dead tree alone in Kruger National Park was unusual, as there were no other Ground Hornbills in sight. The young bird was looking about as it perched, systematically preening its white primary wing feathers.
