Severe flash floods hit a market in the West Sumatra province of Indonesia on Thursday (March 12th) destroying shops and blocking bridges.

Footage filmed in Pakan Rabaa Sitalang in Agam Regency showed a river of muddy floodwaters churning through the market.

The debris swept away by the flooding later blocked a nearby bridge and caused the water to flow over the crossing point.

According to local residents, the flash flooding was produced after only half an hour of heavy rainfall.

Some blamed illegal logging in a forest 3 kilometres away for the flooding.

In footage filmed on March 12, show the traditional market of Pakan Rabaa Sitalang in Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province, flooded with a mixture of mud and wood from the river in front of.

Heavy floods destroyed several shops and washed away the goods for sale.

Electric poles are constantly under flood pressure causing the wires sparks (time code video: 01:12).

According to one resident, Emritas Dt. Nan Kodoh (52 y.o) video filmer, at that time the flow on the bridge in the river covered with fallen wood, so the water overflowed from the river.

"In only about 20 minutes after the heavy water came, the connecting bridge to the neighboring village was broken down by flooding. Bridge pieces and wood hit nearby trees and dragged the electric cables until the power poles collapsed. We ran to save from the collapse of the electric cable that stretched above." Dt Nan Kodoh said.

Broken bridges make the flow of heavy currents in the river start smoothly and reduce the overflow of water to the roads and markets.

When the water receded, residents were seen catching fish that were swept away by the flood and took goods that could be saved.

Residents said flash floods occurred after the area was raining heavily for half an hour. Similar flash floods in this area also occurred in 2005. Alleged illegal logging in the forest Tandikek hill which is located about 3 kilometers from the location.
