This science teacher in Terrigal, New South Wales, demonstrates the exponential growth of the COVID-19 virus by using bread and a toaster.

Jacob Strickling uses the toasting of bread as an analogy to the development and spreading of COVID-19 during this pandemic.

The teacher highlights the importance of social distancing as for the first few intervals the bread remains white yet in this analogy symptoms can still be spread.

As time goes on the bread becomes more and more toasted indicating more people becoming infected by the virus, as shown on Jacob's graph.

Once infected, it can take up to 14 days for the symptoms to appear in a person. During this time, the infected person could go on and infect many others. For quite some time, there are no outward symptoms, similar to white bread in a toaster that doesn't change colour much at first. The toast actually changes colour exponentially, not linearly. Similar to the spread of a virus, which must be stopped from transmitting from one person to the next. A final point is that you only realise the toast is burning quite suddenly and somewhat unexpectedly. This is similar to having a virus, the symptoms of dry coughing and fatigue can occur quite sometime after being first infected.
