South African police and army deployed to enforce coronavirus lockdown
Police Minister, Bheki Cele, visited Cape Town to inspect a police parade at 35 Squadron in Belhar, before the units deployed to enforce the national shutdown to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.
On Monday President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a 21 day national shutdown in terms of the country’s disaster management laws. The lockdown started on Friday the 20th go March and will end on Friday the 17th of April.
During the lockdown period only businesses providing essential services may operate and all public transport services are suspended. Only transport services for essential service workers are allowed to operate during the lockdown period.
Minister Cele went on a walkabout with the army and police to the impoverished community of Khayelitsha, where the community has largely not complied with the lockdown regulations.
