Silverback mountain gorilla settles down for a mixed salad in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

A sunny day with the Amahoro Group in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, and the silverback leader Ubumwe moves in to select a feeding site, then peels and eats celery stalks, followed by leaves of a vine called Droquetia, which he strips by hand and between his teeth.
Droquetia leaves are covered in tiny hairs making them a bit dry to chew, so mountain gorillas like to eat them with bamboo shoots or celery to moisten the mouthful - a mixed salad in the mouth.
Note: gorilla visits are suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic as a precaution against disease transmission to these endangered apes.
