In March 2019, a large excavator working for the Environment Agency on improvements to the sea defences in Sheerness, Kent in an ironic twist of fate got caught out by the tide and ended up being submerged underwater!

The machine estimated to be worth around £150,000, was working on a £1 million improvement scheme to the Neptune Jetty at low tide, when an engine pipe broke, which meant it couldn't be moved before the tide rose around it.

The same jetty previously made headlines way back in 1975 when Sheppey entertainer Michael Crawford used it to film scenes for the 1975 Christmas special of his BBC TV comedy series 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em'. His character Frank Spencer was filmed driving his car off the jetty and into the sea!
