Thai people converge on pawn shops to sell goods during COVID-19 economic slump

Locals crowded a pawn shop in Chaiyaphum, northeast Thailand on Thursday morning (April 2) to sell their possessions as the COVID-19 pandemic hits the economy.

Millions of people in the country are estimated to have been forced out of work after vast numbers of business closed due to coronavirus restrictions.

Bars, restaurants, and shops have all been forced to shut and many hotels have closed after arrivals into the country were banned.

The government ordered loan companies to decrease the interest rates to help locals while p awn shops have prepared cash reserves in preparation for more people liquidating items such as gold for fast cash.

Footage shows how many residents affected by the Covid-19 economic slump are trading in their jewellery at the shop to give them money to pay bills.
