In an attempt to contain the spread of the deadly coronavirus, the Mandi Haldwani administration has installed its first decontamination and sanitization tunnel in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. 

The decontamination tunnels were installed in collaboration with Mandi council at Haldwani city of Kumaon division.

As the novel coronavirus cases continue to be on the rise in India, decontamination is one of the biggest hurdles that the government faces today.

The markets are huge points of crowding and even during the lockdown, people continue to visit them daily, complicating government efforts to enforce social distancing and check the spread of coronavirus.

Disinfectant tunnels, basically a small covered corridor, will be installed at entrances to these markets and nozzles on the walls will spray a low-concentration mixture containing chemical sanitizing solutions on people who enter.

Thousands of dollars have been spent on the whole project in constructing the tunnels.

In a day, a tunnel installed at the main entrance of the mandi can sanitize thousands of people along with their two-wheelers.

Market Committee Chairman thanked the Mandi Council for the commendable initiative.

He said that no one will be allowed inside the Mandi without the sanitization process.

The Mandi council plans to construct more such tunnels across the city to scale up the coronavirus prevention initiatives.
