This is the painful moment a rescue worker is bitten by a wild python as he tries to catch it with his bare hands.

Nikom Watthanasiri was called to deal with the 10ft long snake after it swallowed a chicken at a home in Chachoengsao, eastern Thailand, last Friday (April 3) morning.

Footage shows how the 35 year-old volunteer reached through the protective net where the snake had coiled up inside to digest its victim. The wild python could not because it was full after swallowing a whole hen.

However, it managed to plunge its killer fangs into Nikon's wrist - sending blood pouring all over the ground.

Nikom said: ''The pain was like being stabbed very quickly with something very sharp. It's lucky that python's are not venomous, but I was still concerned about infections.''

The emergency volunteer was helped by colleagues at the scene before he was taken to the local hospital.

Other volunteers used a long stick with handler gear to catch the serpent and stuff it into the bag.

Resident Sommai Keawnet, 48, said he called the emergency services after his son saw the snake feasting on the chickens.

He said: "My son noticed a snake eating a hen in the coop while he was feeding the herd, he told me and then called the reptile specialist to take the python out."

The python, a non-venomous snake, was later released into the woods by the rescue team.
