Mildred Falls: San Diego's Tallest Waterfall - only flows after a heavy rain

Buy video

These falls are about 300 feet tall and generally only flow this well when there has been unusually heavy rains.

I shot this yesterday (April 8, 2020) with my Canon EOS R.

Note that these falls are on National Forest Land and are currently open - unlike the State Park System in California. I wanted to shoot these falls as soon after a good rain as possible, and headed out yesterday afternoon after carefully checking the storm radar. Just as I pulled up, the rain stopped and the sun even peeked out between the clouds a few times. If you decide to go here, please practice social distancing. I was the only one here yesterday. If you seen more than a handful of people at the trailhead, please come back some other time. Those in charge of the National Forests are trusting us to practice social distancing, so please don't ruin it for everyone.

According to "San Diego County Place Names, A To Z) by Leland Fetzer, the waterfall is most likely named after Mildred Williams - a Julian resident in the early 1900's. Mildred committed suicide here by leaping into the falls
