Visayan Warty Piglets at Newquay Zoo

These two little girls were born at Newquay Zoo in Cornwall.

Visayan Warty Pigs are considered to be one of the Worlds’ rarest pig species and are listed as ‘Critically Endangered’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Threats to their continued survival come mainly from habitat loss and exploitation, reducing range and population viability.

John Meek, animal collection manager, says: “We are delighted by the arrival of these two little female piglets. Mother and babies are doing very well and we hope to integrate the new arrivals into the larger group very shortly”

These new arrivals are the result of Newquay Zoos’ participation in international breeding programs, which aim to ensure the survival of endangered species, and the zoo works in collaboration with zoos and conservation charities worldwide to preserve and protect many threatened species.

Newquay Zoo is one of the largest not-for-profit charities in Cornwall – with all money made going directly back into the Zoo and its conservation projects.
