The Georgian Orthodox Church marks Palm Sunday today (April 12), with worshippers attending services despite government quarantine restrictions.

Footage shows the Divine Liturgy being held at St. Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi, with attendees queuing in spaced lines outside the building, and later receiving Communion inside.

The Georgian Patriarchate made the controversial decision this year to forgo using disposable cutlery for dispensing Communion wine, meaning many worshippers will be receiving wine from the same dishes.

Today, the Georgian Orthodox Church marks Palm Sunday – the "Glorious Entrance of Jesus to Jerusalem".

Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday.

The feast commemorates an event mentioned by all four Canonical Gospels - the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his cricifixion.

In most liturgical churches Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches or the branches of other native trees representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem.

On the occasion of the holiday, festive services are being held in the temples throughout the country.

Divine Liturgy is being held at St. Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi.

Holy Week, the last week of Lent, will start after the Palm Sunday.
