Xolani Sotashe and Cameron Dugmore, from the African National Congress, as well as the media were blocked by Cape Town Law Enforcement officers from entering the tent site in Strandfontein where homeless people are being housed during the national coronavirus lockdown.

Sotashi is the headof the opposition in the City of Cape Town Council and Dugmore is the head of the opposition in the Western Cape's Provincial parliament. Cape Town and the Western Cape is politically controlled by the Democratic Alliance, South Africa's official opposition party. The Western Cape is the only province in South Africa not controlled by the ruling African National Congress, the political home of Nelson Mandela.

On a media tour last week, the homeless people in the camp tried to break down the fence and also voiced their displeasure at conditions within the site. One person described the facility as a concentration camp while one homeless man claimed they were being treated like animals.

Law enforcement officers in riot gear were also filmed at the gate.
