Raccoons foraging naturally and being 'masked bandits' mugging passersby for snacks in Stanley Park, Vancouver, Canada

Raccoons may be one of the most familiar mammals in North America, but for a visiting naturalist from Britain, this chance to watch them up close was very exciting. Raccoons are normally nocturnal omnivores but this family foraging in the daytime in Stanley Park, Vancouver, was clearly very relaxed around people. They chuntered to each other while digging up nuts and worms, plus occasional chicken bones from discarded fast food, until one of the passersby took out a bag that they suspected contained food, whereupon they lived up to their name of 'masked bandits' and rushed over to demand some. Park rules ask people not to feed them, and most obey, but the raccoons' behaviour suggests that their tactics sometimes work.
