The City of Cape Town blocked opposition parties, the media and Doctors Without Borders from entering the camp set up to house homeless people during the national coronavirus lockdown.

Gilles Van Cutsem, a senior TB adviser at Doctors Without Borders says they found that conditions at the site were not ideal to house people during the lockdown and called for the decommissioning and closure of the site.

JP Smith, the head of safety and security in Cape Town, has come under intense criticism for what has been happening at the site. Last week an 18 year old woman was raped at the site and it was also revealed that homeless people were being fined at the sit.

South Africa is under a national lockdown until the end of April.
