This was the moment police in Newcastle, UK detained a man claiming to be an independent journalist gathering content for a story during their daily exercise.

The filmer begins to record patrolling police officers question some locals outside a shop.

After a few minutes, one of the police officers marches up to the filmer and tells him "this is not exercise" to which the filmer replies, "you do not tell me what to do, I'm going on my exercise goodbye."

As the police try to stop the filmer from walking away he states that he is an "independent journalist working on a story".

The officer then catches up stating the journalist is "locked up" after breaching "COVID-19 legislation."

The filmer later explained: "I was arrested, taken to Newcastle custody suite, placed in a cell for about 15 minutes. Told I was going to be charged under COVID-19 legislation.

"The custody sergeant talked to arresting sergeant, saying to him that he hadn't followed procedure.

"I was then driven back to Gateshead where my car was. The police told me 'If you don't return to that street by Friday, I'll bin the charge'."

This footage was recorded on April 14.
