A runaway Thai driver dragged a policeman on bonnet for over a mile to avoid being checked.

Police Senior Sergeant Major Montri Nitichai was checking vehicles at a set of lights when the motorist suddenly tried to flee.

CCTV footage shows how the smashed into the cop who fell forward onto the bonnet of the yellow Mitsubishi car.

However, instead of rolling away the officer heroically clung to the vehicle for 2km (1.2 miles) as it sped through the streets of Nakhon Si Thammarat, southern Thailand on April 22.

The officer, who said it was like being in a 'Fast and Furious movie', was later flung to the ground as several more police cars gave chase.

Police Senior Sergeant Major Montri said he stopped to talk with the driver but he refused to open the window. He suddenly accelerated and crashed into him but he clung to the bonnet to try and stop him.

The cop said: "I wanted to talk to him about an accident but he appeared to have a problem with it. He then took me on the road for two kilometres. I felt like I was in the Fast and Furious movie.''

Luckily, the policeman was not injured when the driver swerved and threw him off the bonnet at the nearby Arthit Market before speeding away.

No witness remembered the registration plate of the car as it was obscured and the officer could not clearly identify the driver because he was wearing a cap.

Officers from the Tha Sala district police station are now reviewing CCTV footage to try and identify the owner.

Police Captain Narongchai Khongchuai, the investigator assigned to the case, said: "We will further check all the street camera to find the latter and he will be charged with the law."
